1. Where is St Kitts? St Kitts is one of the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, a mere 5 minute flight, or 45 minute ferry ride from its sister island of Nevis. While they are two separate islands, The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is actually one country. To further orient you, St Kitts is situated approximately 30 miles west of Antigua, or 200 miles southeast of Puerto Rico.
2. How do I get there? From the U.S. If you're travelling from the continental United States, most travellers will have to connect though San Juan, Puerto Rico. From San Juan, you can then take a direct flight to St Kitts on American Eagle (it's about 65 minute flight), which departs several times daily. Alternatively, you can fly to St. Kitts from San Juan on LIAT .
From Canada If you're travelling from Canada, the most convenient way to travel is through Toronto and book one of the direct charter flights (Air Transat) to either St. Kitts, St. Martin or Antigua. Alternatively, you can book with Air Canada to fly directly from Toronto to Antigua. As a guide, it's about a 4½-hour flight from Toronto to St. Kitts or Antigua.
From Europe If you're arriving from Europe, you will have to connect through Antigua or St. Martin. From either of those destinations, you can get a flight to St Kitts on LIAT.
3. What currency doesSt Kitts use? St Kitts uses either US Dollars or Eastern Caribbean (E.C.) Dollars. The exchange rates have been stable and consistently average around the following:
CDN $1.00 = $1.77 E.C. US $1.00 = $2.70 E.C.
4. Where do we go shopping for food? There are two large US style supermarkets (Horsfords-IGA and Rams) located less than a 10 minute drive from the villa. You'll be able to buy a good selection of groceries, including a pharmacy, deli, wines and liquor, Rams is open until noon on Sunday. On Saturday morning there's a tradional West Indian style market in Basseterre, where local ladies sell their fruits and vegetables. 5. Do we need a car? Although the island is small (it only takes 2 hours to drive around the whole island), it's recommended that you rent a car. A car can be rented from about $30 US a day. For your rental car needs, we recommend TDC Thrifty Car Rentals. They can pick you up at the villa and drive you into downtown Basseterre to select a car, and arrange for your temporary St. Kitts drivers license. There are several other rental companies on the island including Avis.
6. Is there cleaning available ? Yes. You can request additional housekeeping services, priced reasonably. Also, we have a washer and dryer for your laundry needs. There is also a gardener who looks after the garden biweekly. 7. How do we find the house when we arrive at the St Kitts airport? Before your arrival, we will coordinate with the taxi driver, Matthew, who will meet you and take you to the villa. Matthew is also an excellent choice for island taxi tours or for those who don't want to rent a car. You will probably wish to arrange your airport departure with Matthew.
8. What is the electrical power at the house? The house has standard North American electrical outlets with 110 volts.
9. Where's the closest beach and golfing? The villa overlooks Half Moon Bay and is situated about 2 blocks from the closest beach. It's a nice quiet beach with coral reefs for good snorkeling. You can walk around the point and be in Frigate bay. The beach there, stretches about a half mile to the Southeast Peninsula, where there are at least a dozen more good beaches over 6 or 7 mile length. The newly redesigned Royal St. Kitts Golf Course is situated right on Frigate Bay and Half Moon Bay. |
